Have you ever heard of the Femegericht and a Freigrafschaft? Are you familiar with damage stones or have you ever come across an ancient Germanic rune mark?

Our tour takes you into the mystical world of the early settlers as well as into the dark times of the Middle Ages, where, for example, the infamous Femegericht (Feme Court) was often used to carry out the death sentence: "Death by hanging from the nearest tree". An old Germanic runic sign discovered in the village center serves as a marker - a fun hike for young and old.

Information

Directions

On the information pillar at the tourist information office, we find a rune with a directional arrow and an indication of the short or long loop. We follow the numbers in the description and walk the small loop first. After crossing the road, the route climbs steeply. At the end of the village, we reach the Rothaarsteig feeder road to the Dicke Linde and follow the steep path branching off to the left. We are greeted by a palpable silence in the forest. At the Schnadestein we have reached the maximum altitude of this loop. We walk slightly downhill to the right on the "Alte Land- und Königsstraße" and reach the Schlink at the Kleiner Niggenberg. A steep hollow path leads down to the right, crosses a crossroads and meets the Brembachrundweg, which leads us to the left into the Nuhnetal. A short distance to the right along the main road, we reach the Nuhnetal footpath and cycle path on the left, which we follow for a short distance towards the village center. If you want to complete the short loop, take the Nuhnesteig trail back to the starting point. However, if you want to complete the long loop, stay on the footpath and cycle path and a little later turn left onto the Kreuzweg. Climbing steeply uphill, we reach the Hackelberg chapel (magnificent view). A little way uphill, we turn right onto a wonderful panoramic path, which becomes a narrow path and leads onto a paved forest path. Turn left to reach the "Sungerplätze". The trail then climbs steeply to the left and turns right again via Bächekopf and Radenstein down to the ski region at Ziegenhellenplatz. A forest path leads us to the mountain station of the Ziegenhellen lift (a suitable resting place with a distant view.) Gently uphill we come to the highest point, the observation tower on the 815 m high Ziegenhellen. The descent leads along an old Grenzweg to Herrengrund - a short detour to the refuge. Back to the ridge, we follow the border to Sayn Wittgenstein to the right and reach the "Bösen Holz"and the "Freie Stuhl", the infamous medieval site.Straight ahead, the trail climbs steeply uphill to the "Siebenahorn", a site modeled on the site of the Femes. Downhill, then uphill and down again, we turn right to the "sacrificial stones". A forest path leads us to the bottom. We choose the left-hand valley path, which crosses the country road near Mollseifen and then takes us downhill over an old Schnade site towards the road, which we cross. Across the road on a narrow grassy path, we cross the stream to the other side of the valley, turn left, turn right before the "Silbersee" biotope and then left again after the pond onto a forest path. It leads to the "Kranebuche", then right to the campsite. Keeping left, we reach the "Bullenwiese" leisure facility and the parish church of St. Johannes Baptist and finally S50 back to the starting point.Path scout: Walter Peis© Hiking magazine
