If these stones could speak, I think, as I slowly stroll around the sprawling complex: they would have a lot to tell. Originally, the limestones lay coarse and gray in the earth. Then they were finely hewn and carefully placed on top of each other as ashlars. To walls that listened for almost a thousand years. The songs of pious Benedictine monks. The activities of immoral abbots. To the quarrels of bailiffs and counts who fought over the possessions of Flechtdorf Monastery. They heard the curses of the mercenaries in the Thirty Years' War, who murdered and plundered. They took pity on the sighs of the sick and infirm when the monastery became a hospital. They framed prayers for peace and intercessions. They blossomed when recently people came, founded an association and since then have cared for and revived the light gray walls. All the stories they have absorbed, for a thousand years, these stones tell. To the one who takes time, lets in and listens. Read >>more here.
