Mountain heaths are habitats for specialists among animals and plants. These include the slow-growing dwarf shrubs that dominate the low-tree landscape: Heather, Blueberry and Cranberry, as well as the rare Crowberry and Dewberry. In summer you can also see arnica, known as a medicinal plant, on the Hochheide, its golden yellow flowers shining in the sun.
In the area you have a good chance to spot a Great Grey Shrike on the spruce tops or hear the call of the cuckoo, which has become rare in many places. A special sight is also the large herd of heath sheep and goats that pass through the area once a year to perform the "maintenance bite" necessary for preservation.
To explore the area, the circular trail signposted by "NH" is recommended. The audio trail of the Rothaarsteig with its ten experience stations, which also include the lookout point on the Clemensberg, also runs along this trail. The Hoppecke spring can also be reached from the circular trail via a branch path.
It is difficult to get there by public transport, because from the village to the Hochheide there is already a 3-4 km long way (depending on the route) with an incline. The nearest bus stop is "Niedersfeld, Post" (walking distance to the starting point at least 60 minutes). The current timetable information can be found at: http://efa.vrr.de
