Light and shadow, mountain and valley, path and trail, dense forest and inspiring views, rock and meadow - the circular hike certified with the German Hiker's Seal has something! You follow the Rothaarsteig for a while, the Oberhundem cliffs may be admired extensively and when you step out of the forest on the donkey path, which lives up to its name, and see the ensemble of houses of Oberhundem, then you know: this fits!
Through the hiking portal at the Haus des Gastes you go slightly uphill through the spa gardens of Oberhundem. Only briefly you touch the road and turn left on a field path uphill out of the village. Quickly you reach a picnic area and dive into the forest on a first path. A small road is quickly reached. Follow the asphalt feeder road to the hikers' parking lot on the left and then begin the steep ascent in the spruce high forest on a wide forest road. Only the chaffinch and a pair of jays can be heard. When the first saddle is reached, the trail continues flat along the slope. Moss-covered tree stumps with tree mushrooms inspire. The first highlight is the Oberhundem cliffs, the next is reaching the Rothaarsteig. A little later follows a beautiful wooden lounger, part of the Rothaarsteig furniture. Now it goes downhill until in a hairpin bend the Rothaarsteig says goodbye. Go straight on to the Wiegequelle and to a refuge at the Böhnenkamp (3) . Here turn right with increasingly beautiful views of the Wildhöfer and its neighbors, the path leads slightly uphill to a lookout point with two benches and information boards. At the following crossroads "Brie" begins the circumnavigation of the bare Kahleberg. Dream views accompany the passage. In 2007, Kyrill deforested the entire slope. Now pioneer plants are reclaiming the islands of light. The coming highlight is the Alpenhaus, officially registered as a village since 2011, population five! No matter, the former alpine club house of the Essen section (bed camp, several double rooms) is beautifully situated at 650 m altitude. The entrance to the final chapter is somewhat hidden and heralds the most beautiful stage. In the past, the landlord of the Alpenhaus had to transport everything with burros. The path leads through windthrow areas, through forest, sometimes as a path, sometimes as a track, sometimes as a meadow path. When the edge of the forest is reached after a steep descent, Oberhundem lies in front of the hiker on the left. On the field path into the village and at the first street crossing left uphill back to the starting point.
The tour runs both on wide paths and narrow trails. Some sections are quite steep, good physical condition and walking sticks are helpful.Information about the rescue boardsMostly hiking trails run away from villages and settlements and every hiker has already thought about what would happen if there was an emergency. How can I be found here? Where am I at all? Can the rescue service reach me?But in an emergency, things have to happen quickly! That's why the network of hiking trails in the Lennestadt & Kirchhundem region is equipped throughout with so-called rescue signs. On the green and white plaques, which are attached to the posts of the signposts, there is a number that you have to give when you make your emergency call. This helps rescue workers know exactly where you are and valuable time can be saved.Note on the increased risk of forest firesPlease remember that there is currently an increased risk of forest fires due to the drought! Therefore, please observe the following instructions:Observe the legal ban on smoking in the forest - it applies in spring, summer and autumn, more precisely: from March 1 to October 31.Observe the ban on open fires in the forest and at a distance of 100 meters from the forest.Take glass out of the forest - the burning glass effect can start forest fires. When it is (too) late:Extinguish small incipient fires if you can do so safely. Carefully inspect the site if necessary.Report fires via "112".Leave the danger area by the shortest route. The forest thanks you!Wisent and wild animals on the Rothaarsteig - tips for behaviourMany species of game live in the forests along the Rothaarsteig. Encounters with red deer, wild boar, mouflon and for some time now also bison are possible. You can encounter the latter on the Rothaarsteig between Albrechtsplatz and Dreiherrnstein. The risks posed by bison for the normal hiker are small and can be reduced to an absolute minimum by appropriately adapted and respectful behavior.Walk quietly and unobtrusively at a distance past the animals, do not frighten them and do not look them directly in the eye.If the animals approach you, remain calm, do not Wenden your back to them, and leave the area without rushing, but always keep your eyes on the animal. If the animals fall below a distance that makes you uncomfortable, call loudly, whistle, or otherwise make yourself heard. Watch out for threatening gestures! If sows "chatter their teeth" or bison lower their heads, they are expecting your retreat. Back away!If you have a dog with you, keep it under control on a leash. If an animal attacks your dog, unleash it! The dog is faster and more agile than you and will definitely find you again!
