The people of Winterberg as tradesmen: They went into the distance and brought their wood, iron goods and cloth as far as Holland and Denmark. The monument at the shopping center "Neue Mitte" reminds of this.
Many houses survived the devastating town fire of 1791. The oldest surviving house in Winterberg, a half-timbered house with a large deel door and rich carvings, dates back to 1759!
Even today, half-timbered houses characterize Winterberg's Altstadt. Again and again you will see houses in Winterberg with protective, slated facades under which an elaborate half-timbered framework is hidden. Results of a boom in slate mining in the 19th century.
