You can literally breathe in history when you stand among the earthen ramparts and archaeological sites on the Borberg.
“Mystical”—that’s the word that immediately comes to mind when you immerse yourself in this world. This is where the Germanic tribes once built a ring wall to defend against the Celts, where a church was erected in the 13th century —of which only the foundation walls remain—and where an early medieval cemetery provided a final resting place for the local residents.
Today, the Borberg Chapel, built in 1925, stands at the highest point. This historic site within the city limits is located southeast of the town of Brilon, not far from the Hiebammenhütte.
As the trail continues toward St. Antonius, you can enjoy fascinating views of Elleringhausen, Bruchhausen, and the Bruchhauser Steines.
The route can also be extended, starting and ending at Brilon’s market square. In that case, the distance increases to 12.5 km. The route is marked throughout with the B1 sign.
The hike begins at the Hilbringse hiking parking lot on the Brilon Kammweg and the Rothaarsteig, heading toward Borberg along the Rothaarsteig and the Brilon Kammweg. Running parallel to the gravel path, you’ll reach Borberg via trails. After circling the Borberg—with its archaeological sites, chapel, and hut—you’ll pass the large wooden cross and rejoin the main trail. After the wayside shrine of St. Anthony, the trail turns left back toward the hiking parking lot.If you’d like a longer hike, you can start from Brilon’s market square, walk past the bus stops on Strackestraße until just past the small roundabout, where the first trail marker with the B1 designation points to the left. Then continue straight ahead for about 3 km until you reach the hiking parking lot.
