Explore the milk stations in the idyllic countryside of Referinghausen with the whole family. This family-friendly loop route features a variety of stations that offer fascinating insights into the world of milk production and local agriculture.
Both children and adults can discover here how cows are milked and how dairy products are made. The trail winds gently through the picturesque landscapes of the Hochsauerland district, harmoniously blending culture, nature, and education. Whether young or old, this trail offers everyone the chance to experience nature up close while learning interesting facts about rural life.

Another highlight along the way is the Ebenau Fitness Park: it offers the perfect opportunity to let off some steam and test your fitness. Various stations invite you to get active together and actively experience nature.

The tour ends at the inviting playground in Referinghausen, where the little ones can really let off some steam.

This hike offers a refreshing break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and invites you to enjoy carefree hours filled with the joy of discovery.

Directions

To explore the milk stations in Referinghausen, follow the symbol of Lotte the Cow.From the information board at the hiking parking lot, follow the street “Zum Ehrenmahl” to the Multigenerational Plaza. From there, the trail zigzags uphill past the Open Mind Places “Unter- & Oberholz.” At “Am Steimel,” the route leads through the forest to the 3rd station; continue along the path to the 4th station. Then turn right, right again at the fork, then left, and right at the next fork until you reach the 5th milk station; continue toward the L872, where you’ll soon come to the next milk station, the “Alte Molkerei.” From here, continue toward Referinghausen to Station 7, then turn left to the final milk station at the playground, where we’ll wrap up this short tour.

Safety guidelines

Note: The path to Signpost 3 leads steeply uphill directly from the village. This section of the trail is not suitable for strollers.

Author Tip

The playground at the end of the milk stations is a lot of fun—maybe bring along some snacks for a picnic to wrap up your visit! There’s a vending machine with drinks and snacks in the village center.

How to get there


  • From the east: Take the A44 Dortmund-Kassel to the Wünnenberg-Haaren exit, then the B480 through Brilon and Olsberg toward Winterberg, and then on to Küstelberg, Deifeld, and Referinghausen.

  • From the Rhineland: Take the A4 Cologne–Olpe to the Olpe interchange, then take the A45 toward Dortmund to the Olpe exit, follow the B55 toward Lennestadt, then take the B236 through Schmallenberg and Winterberg, and continue on to Küstelberg, Deifeld, and Referinghausen.

  • From the west: Take the A44 from Dortmund to Kassel, exit at the Werl interchange, then take the A445 via Meschede to Bestwig and Olsberg, heading toward Winterberg, and then continue to Küstelberg, Deifeld, and Referinghausen.

  • From the north: Take the A7, A2, or A33 to the Wünnenberg-Haaren interchange, then take the B480 through Brilon and Olsberg toward Winterberg, and then continue on to Küstelberg, Deifeld, and Referinghausen.

  • From the south: Take the A5 from Frankfurt to Gießen, then the A485/B3 to the Marburg exit, followed by the B252 to Wetter, the B236 to Hallenberg-Winterberg, and then on to Küstelberg, Deifeld, and Referinghausen.
