The view of the famous Mühlenkopfschanze in Willingen is impressive: every year it hosts the FIS Ski Jumping World Cup and is therefore known to many people from television. From there, the trail leads through fir and mixed forest to the "Paradies". On the tour, hikers can enjoy the beautiful landscape, young, natural streams and heavenly tranquillity.
The hiking trail leads along the "Grebensteine" nature reserve. On the eastern slope of the Mühlenkopf, in the immediate vicinity of the ski jump, there is a rare ravine forest with special primeval forest-like vegetation. Because of the large boulders, the steep area is also known as a block pile forest. Summer lime trees, mountain elms and sycamores grow on rocks of gray clay slate, which are trickled through by numerous small springs. The high humidity and low temperatures create a montane climate in which many alpine plants thrive in a herb layer.
The educational forest trail takes you on a journey of discovery into the forest and you will learn a lot about the development of forest types, forest ants, trees, charcoal burning and life in dead wood.
Start in the street "Am Hagen", at the lagoon pool turn left across the parking lot. At the railroad cut, turn right towards the viaduct, then very steeply downhill (danger of slipping in wet/snowy conditions). Below the viaduct, pass the adventure golf course, cross a road and continue straight ahead to the district of Stryck. Pass the water treading pool and Stryckteich pond and enjoy the lapping of the Itter. In Stryck, pass the "Gutshof Itterbach" estate and the "Stryckmühle" mill until you reach the world's largest ski jump. The route continues through the romantic Strycktal (which means "long, narrow valley" in Celtic), past the "Grebensteine" nature reserve to the so-called "Waschkump". From here, the path leads up the Hermecke valley for approx. 1.5 km and thus through "paradise". Before reaching the crest at around 780 m, turn right to return through spruce and mixed forest. After a good 3 km, you reach the Mühlenkopfschanze again, but this time at the top of the inrun tower. The trail continues downhill and after a sharp right-hand bend, it turns left onto the narrow forest nature trail. Past the charcoal pile and interesting illustrated insights into the local nature. Below the wildlife park, you can see Willingen lying in the valley and the beautiful mountain panorama all around.
We recommend sturdy shoes, clothing suitable for the weather, rucksack provisions and sufficient liquids (water, tea).
