The hike along the “Veischede Sonnenpfad” isn’t exactly a walk in the park. But you’ll be rewarded with magnificent views of charming half-timbered villages, vast fields, and forests—and the “Lowwerhannes snack board.”
If you’re fit and ambitious, you can complete the “Veischeder Sonnenpfad” in the Sauerland in a single day. After all, the loop trail, which winds through the Veischede Valley in the Sauerland, is only 37 kilometers long. But it would be a shame if that left you with too little time to enjoy the beautiful surroundings: for example, the view of the charming half-timbered villages nestled in the valley, or the vast fields and forests. Another highlight along the way is Burg Bilstein, which was built in the 13th century and is now used as a youth hostel. The castle grounds—which, by the way, offer a great view of Bilstein and the rolling countryside—are open to visitors when the castle gate is open.
Another special tip for a snack along the way is the “Lowwenhannes snack platter,” which is offered at many establishments along the route. The snack is named after Johann II, the last noble lord to live at Burg Bilstein, who died in 1365. His ghost is said to still roam the woods around the castle to this day. Those who order the snack receive fresh Sauerland rye bread, homemade sausage and ham, and a herbal schnapps.
Since 2013, the “Veischede Sonnenpfad” has held the “Qualitätsweg Wanderbares Deutschland” seal of quality.
Just 15 km from the Sauerland Line (A45) highway, the gently rolling landscape of the southern Sauerland welcomes you. Enjoy and discover the impressive elevations, the crisp, clear air, and the views of the valley with its picturesque half-timbered villages along the Veischede Sonnenpfad.
Hike a single stage from town to town or the entire loop (approx. 10–12 hours), stop for a meal at one of the restaurants along the trail, or spend the night at one of the hotels or guesthouses in the Veischedetal hospitality district, where the friendly hosts will be happy to welcome and cater to you.

Hiking trails usually run away from towns and settlements, and every hiker has wondered at some point what would happen if an emergency were to occur. How can I be found here? Where am I, anyway? Can emergency services reach me?
But in an emergency, speed is of the essence! That’s why the Veischede Sonnenpfad is equipped with so-called rescue signs along its entire length. The green-and-white plaques attached to the signposts feature a number that you must provide when making your emergency call. This allows emergency responders to know exactly where you are, saving valuable time.
