The SauerlandSpur corresponds to the so-called “Nordschleife” of the Veischede Sonnenpfad. It requires a fair amount of stamina, as this varied loop trail features many ascents and descents, some of which are quite steep. Beautiful flora and magnificent views enhance the tour.

The SauerlandSpur trail leads from Bilstein to the slopes of the Hohe Bracht. A good level of fitness is required due to the numerous ascents and descents. Spectacular panoramic views and a varied landscape characterize the tour, which also offers a touch of medieval charm thanks to Burg Bilstein. Burg Bilstein was built in the 13th century. Today, it serves as a youth hostel. The castle grounds—which, by the way, offer a great view of Bilstein and the rolling countryside—are open to visitors when the castle gate is open.
The hike begins at Amtshausplatz Bilstein (B). The trail climbs steadily until you reach the slope of the Hohe Bracht. You’ll immediately find yourself walking along a trail through the lush, untamed mixed vegetation that is repopulating a wind-felled area. Stunning views enhance this section all the way to the L715. After crossing the road, you’ll first ascend along a trail, then continue uphill on wide paths to the Bonschlade intersection. A very steep ascent up to the Wimpel follows. After passing the summit, you’ll descend while enjoying great views. You’ll be accompanied by extensive tree plantations. From the next intersection, the route winds up and down, often through coniferous forest, though deciduous trees also appear from time to time. Finally, you’ll reach the Maumke-Bonzlerhammer local road, which crosses your path. You’ll climb the next hilltop. Once at the top, you’ll enjoy a fantastic panoramic view of Meggen and the Lenne Valley. The next stop is the Kreuzberg with its small chapel. After passing a mountain shelter, turn sharply left at two benches onto a dirt road. The path descends through lush meadows, past a beautifully situated rest area with a view of Bonzel, down toward the Veischede Valley, and enters the forest. There, be sure not to miss the turn to the left onto a trail. The trail ends at the parking lot on the B55.Carefully cross the state highway and keep to the left for 50 meters. Then continue to the right toward the sports field and cross the rushing Veischede River via a bridge. The trail then climbs steeply uphill. Once you reach the top, the following section offers a wonderful view of the village of Bonzel. Continuing on, you’ll reach a fantastic stretch of trail through mixed oak forest; as you pass rugged cliffs, the exertions of the climb fade into the background. Then the trail levels off, and from the edge of the forest you can enjoy a beautiful view. Now the trail gets steep again, as you must conquer the Rosenberg. After crossing the summit, the trail leads steadily downhill through a magnificent beech forest on wide forest paths. Suddenly, the forest opens up, and Burg Bilstein offers a touch of medieval charm with a beautiful view of the village of Bilstein (the castle grounds may be visited when the castle gate is open). A flight of stairs leads down into the village, and you walk the last few meters back to Amtshausplatz.
Sturdy shoes, rain gear, hiking poles, and snacks for the hike are recommended for this tour.
The tour mostly follows wide trails. However, some sections are narrow and require sure footing.
