This circular hiking trail in the Diemelsee Nature Park begins in the village of Welleringhausen—one of the smallest villages in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district. In the nature park at the foot of the long-extinct Grotenberg volcano, hikers repeatedly come across traces of the Earth’s history and the region’s border history. A wide variety of plant species bloom there. Typical examples include heath carnation, field thyme, and sharp stonecrop. Those who hike with a certified Geopark guide will learn many fascinating facts about the nature park’s flora and its geological features.

Information

Directions

The Welleringhausen Volcano Trail begins at the fire station in Welleringhausen, located at Zum Sonnenberg 12. Six stops provide information about geological and botanical features as well as the history of the town, including the Romanesque St. Abraham’s Church. Passing Grotenberg and Sonnenberg, the history trail follows the Uplandsteig certified hiking trail for a short stretch to Krutenberg. It then continues along the same route as the Volcano Trail back to the starting point. You can also walk the trail in the opposite direction.

Equipment

We recommend sturdy shoes, weather-appropriate clothing, a backpack with snacks, and plenty of fluids (water, tea).

Author Tip

Combine both trails: the Volcano Trail and the History Trail. Both trails follow the same route for a portion of the way.
