Hochsauerland Kammweg

From Züschen at around 470m above sea level, the route leads via the Kreuzweg to the Hackelberg (690m) and on through the Züschen forest up to the Ziegenhellen (816m), the center of a star-shaped mountain massif that stretches an impressive 10km in diameter. An energy-sapping climb that is rewarded with a beautiful view.

On the Ziegenhellen, the Hochsauerland-Kammweg meets the Sauerland-Höhenflug and continues with it in a north-westerly direction. Through the secluded forests on the Rothaar ridge, the route continues without any major climbs in the tranquillity of nature past the Zwistberg (744 m) to the small forest village of Mollseifen.

The ascent to the Kahler Asten, certainly the most famous mountain in the Sauerland, follows a little later. With outstanding views, the Hochsauerland Kammweg continues across the heathland of the Kahler Asten to the source of the Lenne. The ponded spring, which only carries water periodically, is located at an altitude of 820 m, making it the highest spring in north-west Germany.

Via Altastenberg, the Hochsauerland Kammweg now heads north to the Großer Bildchen, a pass at 708m above sea level. Here the Kammweg bends to the west and continues to the Rolandshütte. From here it is a long forest hike via Waldemei (724m), Schellhorn (660m) and Weißes Kreuz (500m) down to Winkhausen in Schmallenberg.
