The medieval Heidenstraße is a traditional pilgrimage route that leads from Leipzig to Cologne. As an important section of the European pilgrimage route network, it was already an important route in the Middle Ages for believers from northern and eastern Europe who were making their way to Santiago de Compostela.
The Sauerland section of the Heidenstraße begins in Korbach and runs over the hills of historic Kurköln through today's Hochsauerland and the district of Olpe to Meinerzhagen. The route follows old trade, military and pilgrimage routes that have been used for centuries.
The route is marked throughout with the yellow scallop shell on a blue background - the internationally renowned symbol of the Way of St. James. Along the way, pilgrims will find numerous historic churches, chapels, monasteries and lovingly maintained villages that bear witness to the region's Christian heritage.
The Heidenstraße not only offers a spiritual journey to yourself, but also an intense experience of nature. Forests, ridges and expansive views make pilgrimages in the Sauerland a particularly decelerating and grounding experience.
If you are looking for a rest along the way, the certified partner businesses of the Sauerland-Camino are the perfect place to stay. These pilgrim-friendly accommodations not only offer a relaxing overnight stay, but also helpful support along the way.
