A challenging winter hike over the Rothaar ridge awaits us. But there are great panoramic views along the way.
From Kahler Asten, follow the course of the Rothaarsteig (initially cleared) to the Lennequelle spring and continue along a snow path down a hollow path to Landwehr (Lennequelle spring to Landwehr not cleared). Continue in the direction of Lenneplätze - keep straight ahead following the Rothaarsteig. Continue over a slight ascent to the Gerkenstein, where you walk west along the Grenzweg down towards Langewiese. Continue along the Grenzweg to the Knäppchen curve. From here, take the Rothaarsteig (snow path) up a steeper ascent to the Hoheleye ridge. Continue to the Hoheleye hut and descend to Hoheleye. From there, take the snow path back via the "Fürstenjause" and the Höhenhang ski area to Langewiese.
Make sure you wear good footwear. Winter boots with a good profile or with snow claws are particularly suitable. Dress appropriately for the weather. Take a cell phone with you in case of an emergency. Use walking poles to ensure a secure grip on snow and ice. Bear in mind that walking on snow can take longer. There may be icy patches on sunny slopes.
Watch the ice-cold spring water make its way through the snow at the source of the Lenne.
The Kahler Asten can be reached by car via the B 480 and L 540.
