The starting point of the loop hike is at the Weddelsee Hiking Portal, where the Medebach Bergweg trail also begins. The first section runs along the former railway embankment of the narrow-gauge railway: From 1902 to 1953, the “Feurige Elias” chugged along this route toward Steinhelle near Olsberg.

Before the route enters the Weddel Forest, we can enjoy a fantastic view of the old Hanseatic city from the hilltop. On natural trails and paths, we explore the Weddelberg, which rises to just under 500 meters, and a small highlight awaits us at the Hasenkammerblick, where—as the name suggests—the view extends into the Hasenkammertal valley. We also gaze far into the Rothaar Mountains. A panoramic information board explains the surrounding mountains. Up here, it’s also a great spot to take a leisurely break. A forest sofa, along with a wooden table and bench, warmly invite you to relax. We’ll head downhill through the forest on winding paths all the way down to Weddelsee.

Information

Directions

The loop trail is marked throughout with the black-and-white A3 symbol. The starting point of the loop hike is the hiking information kiosk at Weddelsee. We pass the sign for the Medebach Bergweg and walk along the former railroad embankment, then cross a road and follow a short path uphill through hedges and bushes. After walking uphill along the road for about 200 meters, we turn left onto the Weddel. Continuing uphill, we eventually keep to the left again and reach the Weddel hiking parking lot, where we find a hiking sign for orientation. Walking along a gravel path, we keep to the right. After about 200 meters, we have an unobstructed view of the landscape to our right. Continuing to follow the A3 trail marker, we turn left back into the forest until we finally reach the Hasenkammerblick. From here, we head back down a fairly steep path to the starting point at Weddelsee. The trail often follows natural paths and trails and is therefore not suitable for strollers or bicycles!

Latest Information on Our Forests—The Bark Beetle and Its Impact

Forest owners are working to implement the necessary measures in the forests and remove the damaged timber. However, due to the scale of the problem, this work cannot be completed quickly. The clearing and reforestation of the damaged forest stands will therefore take a long time and may occasionally lead to disruptions such as closures and detours in the forests. Please keep this in mind whenever you visit the forest.

We therefore appeal to everyone who cares about the forest:

  • Please understand that, given the current situation, extensive forest work is necessary and will be part of your forest experience for the time being.

  • Please be especially careful during your recreational activities and follow all posted signs and, if applicable, restrictions.

Please be considerate...
