The entrance and finish are at St. Blasius Church - the trail marking is W1. The circular hiking trail has a total length of 15.5 kilometers, but can be shortened to 6, 9 (Rehhecke: towards Schützenkreuz and back with Heidenstraße) or 12.5 (Knick) kilometers. As the name already suggests, the hiking trail leads along the old Heidenstraße (this centuries-old historical army, trade and pilgrimage route between Leipzig and Cologne, crosses the Kurkölnische Sauerland in the Hochsauerland and in the district of Olpe), past the Schwedenschanzen (old border fortifications) to the Schwedenhütte in the Winterberg hilltop village of Altastenberg. One crosses the nature reserve Rehhecke with juniper heath and Hudebuchen and receives from the Wesenberg again and again beautiful views of the federal gold village Westfeld, the high bone and the Kahler Asten.

Directions

You start your tour at the SGV hiking portal in the center of Westfeld. First, the trail runs along the W1 in a wide loop and after about 2.5 km past a cabbage hut over the Wesenberg.Then it leads east to the Rehhecke nature reserve, a juniper grove with old copper beeches, dwarf heaths and rare plant and animal species further to the Hubertusstein.From here, you first follow the Heidenstraße steeply uphill to its summit at approx. 766 m, where you can enjoy a fantastic view. Follow the Heidenstraße until you reach the Alte Schanzen, where you have the possibility to turn right in the direction of the Schwedenhütte.Alternatively, follow the trail As2 further to the large parking lot in Altastenberg. There you walk sharp right on the As3, past the way stone Heidenstraße to the Schwedenhütte, where you can stop.Continuing on the As3 you will reach a fork in the road, where you change to the left onto the hiking trail W1, which is characterized by a small path through the Buchenwald.The W1 leads the remaining 5 km back to the starting point of the hike, the SGV hiking portal in the center of Westfeld.

Safty guidelines

A rescue point system is installed in the Hochsauerlandkreis. Rescue points can be found, among other things, on the information boards of the junctions and hiking signs. All signposts on this trail are designated as rescue points with official location numbers.

Public transiot

The start of the hike is in the center of Westfeld, directly on the L640 road.

Parking

Parking is available in the center of Westfeld near the church (Winterberger Straße / Dorfstraße junction).Alternatively, you can park in the parking lots in the area of the cross-country skiing center / ski hut (about 1 km from the church).
